nessMediaCenter 1.4 & nessViewer 3.4 for Mac available

In the past the media center and media presentation were (only) controllable by keyboard, Apple remote control and "NV Remote" on iPhone and iPod touch.

Now the media center and media presentation can additionally be controlled by trackpad, (magic) mouse and mouse / scroll wheel.

The media center can be controlled by swiping up & down, clicking the left mouse button to select (or open / present) the current entry or moving up one level by clicking the right button.

The media presentation can be controlled by swiping right & left to select the next & previous media entry (or to jump forward & backward if just one movie is selected) or by clicking the right mouse button to show the presentation menu.

More of these (gesture) events - like rotating and zooming - will be implemented in the 64 bit versions.

QuickTime (32 bit) for Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)

If Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) is installed by updating a older Mac OS X version, then QuickTime (32 bit) is usually available. The 32 bit versions of nessMediaCenter and nessViewer are based on this.

But if Mac OS X 10.9 is installed by a "clean install", then QuickTime (32 bit) might not be available and must be installed manually. Apple has written a manual for this.

We are working on a 64 bit version of nessMediaCenter and nessViewer since Mac OS X 10.7, which is based on "AV Foundation" instead of QuickTime. But these 64 bit versions are only available on request because we are not satisfied with the scope of features at the moment.

With Mac OS X 10.9 it is possible for the first time to identify incompatible movies and to convert these movies. We added the functionality to edit movies within nessViewer as well.

But we are still working on 2 solutions:
1.) The movie presentation of incompatible movies without conversion.
2.) The presentation of QuickTime VR (panorama) movies.

nessMediaCenter 1.3.7 & nessViewer 3.3.4 for Mac available

After testing our application with Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), we found only one problem: Apple changed the video format description of protected movies (iTunes DRM). Thus movies selected in the MediaCenter were not presented in iTunes. This problem is now fixed.

The AppleScript command to detect the fullscreen mode of iTunes and to switch to fullscreen is not working anymore. After selecting a protected movie in the media center, iTunes shows a grey screen for a short time and then cancels the playback.
So we added a new Apple remote control command to remote control iTunes: "PLAY hold" switches between  fullscreen and window playback. If the fullscreen playback fails, then the playback can be started again via "PLAY" and then "PLAY hold" will switch to fullscreen.

With iOS 7AirPlay of the media server will not be displayed anymore - Apple do not like the idea that other applications offer AirPlay. We are working on this problem...

nessViewer App 1.8 for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch available

Suitable for the new iOS 7 look, nessViewer App is now displayed in a lighter design with flat buttons. This appearance can be disabled / enabled in the "Settings App" at the nessViewer tab.

iOS 7 has a bug which displays fullscreen videos always in portrait mode if added to a landscape view. This behavior is "circumnavigated"by displaying the video player not in fullscreen which has another advantage: if multiple videos are presented continuously then a next / previous button is now available.
By (double) touching, the video controllers can be changed to hidden / visible.

Caused by a bug, YouTube videos were not available with iOS 7 in nessViewer App - this bug has been fixed.

For (free of charge) registered users (available at the download page), we also added support for more providers and content.

We placed a donate button at the bottom of our iOS web page and would be pleased for some donations - nessViewer App is free of charge and without iAds. Please support this offer.

nessMediaCenter 1.3.6 & nessViewer 3.3.3 for Mac available

Arte and ARD mediathek videos can now be played without the Flash player. These are really good news because Flash is a security risk in our opinion.

The Austrian internet offer has been extended and offers now "Aktuell" (news) and "Am Punkt" (political discussions). For the Austrian, Dutch and Swiss internet offer we added images and informations at the overview (similar to the German internet overview).

Additionally we adapted some internet provider offers, so now everything is available again.

If you are using the adult offer, then you should also download and install the extension. Meanwhile more than 1600 links to videos of several providers have been added to the collection, which is now also available at the media center of nessMediaCenter and nessViewer. The collection is also available in the integrated browser (as before) and can now be sorted by newest entries.

nessViewer App 1.7.1 for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch available

On 2/14/2013 we uploaded nessViewer App 1.7.1 - unfortunately it was rejected by Apple. After some discussions and changes suggested by Apple, we uploaded it again 3/3/2013 - and it was rejected again.
After some more discussions, nessViewer App 1.7.1 is now available.

Beside some provider adaptions, the major change is that the following content is now only available for registered users: ARD, Arte and ZDF Mediathek, cinema movies in German and English, entertainment / serials and music.

Our original idea was to offer an app with very much content and features free of charge - and that the people will help us by e.g. clicking "Like it" at the start window. Unfortunately this did not work.

From now on we will send the registration data (free of charge) only to people who do also something for us - e.g. by clicking "Like it" or by reporting about the app in a blog.

nessViewer 3.3 for Mac available (DLNA)

As already announced nessViewer supports now DLNA (UPnP) to access content from DLNA media servers.
Particular pleasant using Mac OS X 10.7 or newer: even MPEG2 movies can now be presented if stored on a NAS for example.  That means that even EyeTV movies can now be played by nessViewer using the DLNA browser (instead of launching EyeTV).
BluRay players are still not accessible by the DLNA browser because the only BluRay player we had for testing do not offer this feature.

The default audio selection for DVD playback, which was already integrated in nessMediaCenter, is now available for nessViewer as well.

Another new feature is the crash reporter which allows it to send bug reports to us instead Apple.

Some internet provider content was adapted as well.
These adaptions were made for nessMediaCenter as well but without releasing a new version. To use the new version, please download the updated application and install it manually.

nessViewer web site available again

Caused by server problems the nessViewer web site and services (incl. email) was not available since yesterday morning.

We tried to repair the server which failed unfortunately - an new installation was necessary.
The web site and service is now available again - the playlists (entertainment, movies, music) will take some time and will be finished in about 12 hours.

We would like to excuse for any unpleasantness.

nessMediaCenter 1.3.5 available

At DVD presentation the default language can be set now in the audio menu of the menubar by selecting "Set As Default". If DD 5.1 or DTS and passthrough (digital audio output) is available for the default language, then this audio stream will be selected automatically.

The default language overwrites any language selection in the DVD menu of the DVD window - in other words: if a default language has been set, then selecting another language in the DVD window will be ignored.
By selecting "Remove Default" the default language will be removed and any selection of a language in the DVD window will work again.

The Apple crash report (in case of an unexpected error) has been replaced by a self developed crash report to send these reports to us instead of Apple. Even if crashes do not occur as far as we know (or at least very rar).

The update of nessViewer will take some time since we are still testing the DLNA player. The pre-release can be downloaded if interested.

nessViewer & DLNA

The pre-release of nessViewer now integrates DLNA as a first step.

After opening the DLNA window by the toolbox or file menu, a window is displayed which allows it to start DLNA. If the firewall is activated then incoming connections for nessViewer must be allowed.

After the DLNA start, all available DLNA devices are shown in the drop down menu.

If the selected device supports media (e.g. a media server like Serviio or NAS volumes), then "Browse" will show the root content. Folders can then be opened and media like movies or pictures presented.

Particularly pleasant is the feature to select multiple media and then to present these media continuously.

So far the following devices have been tested (and work):
  • Fritz!Box NAS Media Server
  • PlexMediaServer
  • PS3 Media Server
  • Serviio Media Server
  • Twonky Media Server (modificated nessViewer version from 3/21/2013 13:35)
  • XBMC UPnP Media Server (modificated nessViewer version from 3/21/2013 12:10)
At the moment we are testing further DLNA devices like BluRay player. If beta tester will find problems, we will updated the pre-release just in time. Experiences or problems can be send to us by email.

For the future further features like a DLNA media server or DLNA remote control are imaginable. An integration in the media center might also be possible.

nessMediaCenter 1.3.4 & nessViewer 3.2.4 for Mac available

Since the last version, the iPhoto and iTunes album overview shows a preview for each entry. We adapted this now for the internet: at German television, entertainment and music, a preview and description will we shown in near future. Currently we are working at the German version...

DailyMotion and YouTube has changed their video setup - we adapted the MediaCenter aka media presentation.

nessViewer App for iOS was adapted as well and uploaded to the Apple App Store - hopefully this time the new version will be available soon. The new version can now be updated for registered devices.

nessMediaCenter 1.3.3 & nessViewer 3.2.3 for Mac available (iPhoto / iTunes)

The "iTunes Control" of the media center was improved to fix a iTunes-AppleScript bug and to make the selection of playlists easier:
1.) The last selected playlist remains selected and the playback will not automatically start after the start of the iTunes control.
2.) After the selection of another playlist, the playback of the first track will only start if the playback was already started. Otherwise a cover preview and the number of tracks will be shown.
3.) Next and previous track does not only work again, but will also switch to the last / first track if no previous / last track exists.

A preview and number of movies will also be shown for iTunes movie playlists.

The iPhoto folder and album display was improved as well: a preview and number of media will now be shown.
